Frequently Asked Questions
Due to variations in worship style and beliefs of Mennonites
around the world , the answers to these questions may not reflect the
views of all Mennonites. In fact, I guarantee they don't.Do
we allow visitors?
Our doors are always open to anyone who is interested. We often
have people stop by who are curious about us, but have no intention of
getting involved. We welcome you, but be careful, you might like us.
Can anyone become a Mennonite?
Yes. The term Mennonite is used to describe both an ethnic group
of people as well as a branch of Christianity. Both groups claim the
title 'Mennonite' but are not synonymous. As Christians, one of our main
purposes is to share our understanding of God with others and help them
grow in their faith. A few of us 'ethnic Mennonites' would also love to
share with you from our rich culture, but we won't make you eat the
borscht if you don't like it.
Aren't we like the Amish?
The Amish are a sister group to the
Mennonites. The Amish maintain a strict code of conduct in order to
maintain their lifestyle. While we respect the same principles that the
Amish do, (simple living, community, family ...) each individual is
allowed to decide for themselves what are important issues and what are
not.
How do we dress?
Pretty normal I suppose. Flamboyant formal dress won't impress us
though.
Do we drive horse and buggies?
It sounds like a lot of fun, but I don't think they allow them on the
freeway.
Do the women wear head coverings?
Head
coverings (or prayer coverings) are worn by some Mennonite women who
grew up in that tradition. This is similar to the fact that there are
Mennonite communities that still ride horse and buggies. Very few
families who want to maintain those tradition choose to live in Dallas.
